WHAT IS AROMATHERAPY?
Translated literally, it means the therapy of aromas. Restoring
health, vigor and vitality through the use of essential oils is known as
Aromatherapy. It is an Alternative Medical Modality, particularly in European
countries.
The term Essential is applied to oils because they are the essence
or fragrant part. The term Volatile is applied because they evaporate when
exposed to the air at ordinary temperatures.
The study of the science of smell is called Osmology. The ability
to smell, like any sense, sharpens and intensifies the more it is used.
Humans can distinguish between 2000-4000 different odors. For any substance
to arouse the sensation of smell, it must contain volatile molecules, which
can pass through air and water. This enables the nerve receptors in the
surface of the mucus membranes of the nasal passages to smell. The information
is immediately relayed to the brain. Our sense of smell is 10,000 times
more sensitive than our sense of taste.
Essential oils are used in the food industry, perfume industry, health
food products, pharmaceuticals, toothpaste, chest rubs, cough syrups, linaments,
inhalations and perfumes.
HOW CAN AROMATHERAPY HELP ME?

a protective device. It helps us determine when our food has gone bad or

smoke. Our sense of smell is the first step in the digestive process. The
smell of delicious food causes our saliva and digestive juices flowing.
